Michigan Apples

“Dear Rose, I picked a barrel myself before breakfast. Write soon and tell me the news. Love from Edith” Postmarked Aug. 3, 1905
While many things have changed in the last 114 years, some things have not changed at all. And one thing that has not changed is the popularity of Michigan apples. While we don’t see many people picking or selling apples by the barrel today, a recent trip to the local farmer’s market proved to me that apples are still very popular. Nearly every shopper I saw at the market that morning was carrying a carrying a bag of apples. Some of these people just couldn’t wait to try one and were crunching on an apple as they finished their shopping.
I have a feeling that Edith’s family enjoyed tasty apple pies and apple treats all winter long from the barrel of apples she picked that morning in 1905. I think I will have to visit an orchard myself this fall. A bushel of apples would make lots of great eating for many months to come!
