Deer or Daylilies?

I like the Michigan deer. It refreshes me as out of the corner of my eye, I catch them watching me.  Seeing them bounding gracefully thru the woods without hindrances symbolizes freedom to me.

I also like day lilies. They are one of the easiest flowers to care for. They grow in a variety of soils.  Just like humans, they enjoy the sun as well as partial sun. Not having a green thumb, the day lily is a sure thing- you just can not kill them.flyer

Recently on my routine walk at the crack of dawn, I noticed a hand made sign along the paved asphalt trail:

“Free Daylilies! Probably orange, but maybe yellow or burgundy. I give up!!!!!! The deer have eaten them for so many years that I do not recall what color I originally planted. They like full sun but do OK in part sun. They are very hardy and spread easily. Have spread but never bloomed BECAUSE THE DEER LOVE THEM!!!!!  If you have no problem with deer, help yourself to these daylilies!!!!”

Maybe a hundred small clumps of daylilies, now run along the edge of our lawn, separating the natural from the lawn we cut. As for the deer, occasionally we catch a glimpse of them on their way to get a drink. Deer or Daylilies? We will welcome either.

Check back this June for the results of the color they are.

In the meantime check out: Daylilies
